The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies invites proposals from Workshop Coordinator(s) to conduct\u00a0two-week research workshops at the Museum during summer 2016. \u00a0Proposals are welcome in all\u00a0relevant disciplines, including history, political science, literature, Jewish studies, philosophy, religion,\u00a0anthropology, comparative genocide studies, and law.
\nSummer Research Workshops provide an environment in which groups of scholars working in closely\u00a0related areas of study\u2014but with limited previous face-to-face interaction\u2014can gather to discuss a central\u00a0research question or issue; their research methodologies and findings; the major challenges facing their\u00a0work; and potential future collaborative scholarly ventures.
\nParticipants have access to approximately 70 million physical pages of Holocaust-related archival\u00a0documentation; the Museum\u2019s extensive library; oral history, film, photo, art, artifacts, and memoir\u00a0collections; and a Holocaust survivor database. Participants also have access to more than 100 million\u00a0digitized pages from the holdings of the International Tracing Service (ITS), a collection that holds\u00a0information on the fates of 17.5 million people who were subject to incarceration, forced labor, and\u00a0displacement as a result of World War II. Many of these sources have not been examined by scholars,\u00a0offering unprecedented opportunities to advance the field of Holocaust studies.<\/p>\n
The Summer Research Workshop program has a two-stage application process. \u00a0Stage One is a\u00a0Preliminary Application, consisting of a one-page single-spaced description of the proposed workshop\u00a0that details the research project\u2019s focus, significance, scope, methods, objectives, and expertise required\u00a0from potential participants. Applications should include CVs for no more than two workshop\u00a0coordinators. Stage One applications are due\u00a0October 9, 2015. Proposals will be evaluated according to\u00a0their (1) potential contribution to scholarship in Holocaust studies; (2) potential to stimulate work in a\u00a0new direction or productive area of research; (3) relationship to larger themes or issues in Holocaust\u00a0studies; and (4) potential for new publications, collaborative research, or research endeavors directly\u00a0resulting from the workshop.<\/p>\n
Applicants will be notified at the end of October whether they will be invited to submit a Full\u00a0Proposal in the second round of the competition, with the assistance of Mandel Center staff. \u00a0The\u00a0deadline for the full proposal is February 5, 2016. \u00a0Applicants will be notified of the Mandel Center\u2019s\u00a0decision in March 2016.<\/p>\n
