From its inception, Printed Matter has tried to present topics and discussions around the legacy of Primo Levi as well as on the culture and traditions of the Jews in Italy.<\/p>\n

In doing so, we have drawn on many sources, from personal accounts, historical data and narratives, to scholarship in various disciplines.  The result is the creation of a kind of history (from the Greek \u1f31\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c1\u03af\u03b1, meaning inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation) of the Jewish presence in Italy. <\/p>\n

We want to think of history in the broadest possible terms as something encompassing, not only past events, but also the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, contradictions and interpretation of those events.<\/p>\n

In these difficult times, history \u2014from ancient to contemporary\u2014can and must serve as a compass. <\/p>\n

We are interested in looking at the past from the perspective of both historiography and other intellectual disciplines, each with its specific methodologies, encompassing different <\/i>types of evidence.<\/p>\n

As the year is coming to a close we propose a pondering on this poem:<\/p>\n

Ancient History <\/b><\/p>\n

The year began with baleful auguries:
\ncomets, eclipses, tremors, forest fires, 
\nthe waves lethargic under a coat of pitch 
\nthe length of the coastline. And a cow spoke, 
\nwhich happened last year too, although last year 
\nno one believed cows spoke. Worse was to come. 
\nThere was a bloody rain of lumps of meat 
\nwhich flocks of gulls snatched in mid-air 
\nwhile what they missed fell to the ground 
\nwhere it lay for days without festering. 
\nThen a wind tore up a forest of holm-oaks 
\nand jackdaws pecked the eyes from sheep. 
\nOfficials construing the Sibylline Books 
\ntold of helmeted aliens occupying 
\nthe cross-roads, and high places of the city. 
\nBlood might be shed. Avoid, they warned, 
\nfactions and in-fights. The tribunes claimed 
\nthis was the usual con-trick 
\ntrumped up to stonewall the new law 
\nabout to be passed. Violence was only curbed 
\nby belief in a rumour that the tribes 
\nto the east had joined forces and forged 
\nweapons deadlier than the world has seen 
\nand that even then the hooves of their scouts 
\nhad been heard in the southern hills. 
\nThe year ended fraught with the fear of war. 
\nNext year began with baleful auguries. <\/p>\n

Jamie McKendrick, born in Liverpool in 1955, has published seven collections of poetry; the most recent being Anomaly <\/i>(2018). He has translated a number of Italian poets, including Valerio Magrelli and Antonella Anedda. He has edited The Faber Book of 20th<\/sup>-Century Italian Poems<\/i> and most recently the complete prose works of Giorgio Bassani: The Novel of Ferrara.<\/i><\/span>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n
