L’INDICE

One of the most respected book magazines in Italy, L’Indice features monthly books reviews and cultural essays on current national and international affairs. With its quarterly supplements, L’Indice della  Scuola and L’Indice dell’Arte, the partnership with the prestigious Italo Calvino Prize for unpublished fiction and its prominent presence at international bookfairs, L’Indice is a unique point of access for anyone interested in the Italian cultural and literary world.

L’Indice’s groundwork lies on the role of the reviewer, who – according to its founders – is responsible for conveying the reasons of a book’s relevance in the mere exposition of its content.

Since its founding in 1984 by Gian Giacomo Migone, Rossana Rossanda and Cesare Cases, the magazine has been directed by the historian Gian Giacomo Migone and has counted among its contributors such prominent intellectuals as Tullio Regge, Norberto Bobbio, Franco Fortini, Aldo Natoli, Cesare Garboli, Claudio Magris, Vittorio Foa, Edoardo Sanguineti, Alessandro Galante Garrone, Carlo Ginzburg, Enzo Collotti and Luciana Castellina.

In 1989 L’Indice entered the European scene co-sponsoring a transnational book journal called Liber (between “libro,” book and “liber,” free), along with the Times Literary Supplement, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Le Monde and El País.

THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS

The New York Review of Books (or NYREV or NYRB) is a semi-monthly magazine with articles on literature, culture and current affairs.

Published in New York City, it is inspired by the idea that the discussion of important books is an indispensable literary activity. Esquire called it “the premier literary-intellectual magazine in the English language.”

In 1979 it founded the London Review of Books, which continues independently. In 1990 it founded an Italian edition, la Rivista dei Libri, published until 2010.

Robert B. Silvers and Barbara Epstein edited the paper together since its founding in 1963, until her death in 2006, and since then, Silvers has been sole editor. The Review has a book publishing division, established in 1999, called New York Review Books, which publishes classics, collections and children’s books.
