This panel will discuss the Fascist murder of Socialist leader Giacomo Matteotti, on the occasion of the publication in English of historian Mauro Canali’s award-winning study about the crime, its coverup, and the circumstances that led to the declaration of the first Fascist dictatorship.⁠

This much-awarded work by one of Italy’s most esteemed historians of fascism, Mauro Canali, is now available in English translation. Based on a wealth of previously unavailable judicial and archival material, it sheds light on how fascism exercised power through violence and corruption from the very beginning. The book reveals the motives that led Mussolini to order the kidnapping and murder of Socialist leader Giacomo Matteotti in 1924, a turning point in Mussolini’s grasp of total power in Italy. Canali further explores the corrupt dealings between the Mussolini family and the American Sinclair Oil Company that Matteotti had intended to denounce in the Italian parliament the day after his death.⁠

To all our friends in São Paulo, Brasil: please join us on August 12 at 6 pm at the 27º Festival de Cinema Judaico, Clube Hebraica for a special screening of Rebecca Samonà's film "L'Isola delle Rose: La Tragedia di un Paradiso" (2009).⁠
During this week of August, 80 years ago, over 1,800 men, women and children of the historical Jewish community of Rhodes arrived in Auschwitz having survived the longest journey from Asia Minor to Poland. They were, for the most part, murdered upon arrival.⁠
⁠
“The Island of Roses” is the first film ever made on the subject and arguably the most intimate and insightful. The director, Rebecca Samonà, captured with rare intensity and a delicate touch, historical complexities and the personal recollections of her mother, Erminia Sidis Licitri, a child at the time, and few family friends who survived the camp: Stella Levi, Aaron Franco, Maty Levy, Lea Gattegno, and Becky Hazan.⁠

Samonà's clear outlook on history and the human condition allows her to anchor an impressive variety of sources onto a simple narrative in which she ties historical documents to poetry not to seduce the viewer but to open true spaces of reflection.⁠

Marco Cavallerin’s La famiglia di piazza Stamira (Affinità Elettive, Ancona, 2023. In Italian), a title that refers to the family’s ancestral home in Ancona, is a captivating read that packs a wealth of information, photographs, documents, letters, and diary entries, tracking the lives of the Sacerdotis a Jewish family from Ancona, from the early decades of the XX century to the present. Neither genealogy, chronicle, or historical account, the book attests to Cavallarin belief in the value of unfiltered first-person accounts. ⁠
⁠
Unlike a historian, the author relies principally on interviews or written testimony by the different family members, without the pretense of “objectivity.” What emerges is a fascinating, highly personal, and intimate group portrait of several generations of a family that spreads out of Ancona to Rome, Ferrara, Milano, Lago Maggiore, Ashkelon, New York, and beyond, against the background of the Fascist racial laws, persecution, emigration by aspiration or necessity. We learn about each family member, their professional successes and travails, love, marriage, and ambitions, but above all, we glimpse into the tonality of their individual lives. ⁠

In its multidirectional work, Centro Primo Levi finds continuous inspiration and guidance in the writings of scholars, artists, and thinkers from our times, and from the past. In facing the complexity of the present moment, we have been re-reading the luminous work of the art critic, essays, screenwriter, novelist, and painter John Berger (1926-2017). In 1972, his book Ways of Seeing and the homonymous TV series — an instant classic— inaugurated the field of cultural studies providing intellectual grounding for politically engaged artists and scholars. ⁠

His collection of essays, The Sense of Sight (Pantheon Books, 1985), is particularly relevant today as it shows how to pose questions to the visual world that allow us to respond, through insight and empathy, to the challenges ahead. ⁠
