In every family people spoke at least two languages, whether Hungarian, Italian, Serb, Croatian or German. Besides, of course, fiumano. In the schools and in court Italian and Hungarian were  the official languages until Fascism prohibited to use any language other than Italian.

There was also another aspect: being a Slav was regarded as something negative, something to be ashamed of.  It had both an ethnic and social connotations.
