Description

Exile and Creativity is a collection of essays from a 2017-18 program series hosted by the Italian Cultural Institute in New York in collaboration with Centro Primo Levi. The essays examine the lives of Italians forced into exile or self-exiled, exploring the dynamic between creativity and displacement against concepts of identity and home. When exile narratives typically emphasize disorientation and loss, series curator Giorgio Van Straten reframes exile as “also something found: an opportunity, a new culture capable of sparking unexpected, unforeseen developments along one’s path through life and, therefore, the possible enrichment of one’s humanistic and cultural heritage.”
