Description

Viterbi’s memoir traces his academic career during a time of rapid technological change that reshaped the U.S. economy and society. Recognizing the postwar demand for innovation, Viterbi and his colleagues pioneered work that bridged scientific research and industry. His key contribution—the Viterbi Algorithm—found applications across multiple fields, most notably by making possible the cellphone. Viterbi co-founded Qualcomm, now a global communications giant. Originally written for family, this thoughtful autobiography offers insights into major 20th century events and examines the impact of science on society, as well as the interplay between creativity, personal initiative, and institutions.
