The Trunk
By Alberto Vigevani
Translated by Will Schutt
“The trunk was a gift from Aunt Jole, Anna’s father’s sister, when we were married, and hastily so. It was (still is, even half a century on) a marvelous trunk, though in certain respects it was more like a closet that lent itself to travel, even if, ultimately and unexpectedly, for reasons I’ll get to, it was destined to stay put.”
