This introductory course reflects a broadening of Centro Primo Levi’s focus from nationalism and the rise of Fascism to the era marked by the Great War, the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, and the rise of the ideals of nation-state and self-determination that still loom large in what came to be known as the “Middle East”.
The course is taught by Monique Sochaczewski, a Brazilian historian who specializes in the relations between Brazil and the Ottoman Empire and is also an observer of current events often featured by Brazilian media. Her classes will be based on nearly twenty years of research on the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. Like most of the presentations at Bookhouse, she will also share her work in progress on an Ibero-American perspective on Ottoman and Turkish history.
Monique Sochaczewski is a permanent faculty member of the Professional Master’s programs in Political Science and International Relations and in Public Management and Policy at the Brazilian Institute of Education, Development and Research (IDP), and a Senior Fellow at the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI).
